Sands of Light

These winding walls were carved by fast flowing flash flood waters. The floods carried abrasive sand, rocks, logs and other debris picked up by the sudden storms. Over millennia, floods sculpted natural corridors through the soft sandstone of this slot canyon. Reflecting light bouncing off the sandstone creates these natural colors from blues and purples to yellows and reds.

Red Dunes

These coral pink sand dunes have turned blondish red after the last direct sunlight hits them. The Dunes are formed from the erosion of pink colored Navajo Sandstone surrounding the park. High winds passing through the notch between the Mouth and Moccasin Mountains pick up loose sand particles and then drop them onto the dunes. dunes are estimated to be between 10,000 and 15,000 years old.

Moon Light Over White Pocket

During a full moon I photographed this remote area called White Pocket. White Pocket is in the Vermillion Cliffs NM along the Utah Arizona boarding. White Pocket is a wild looking rock formation that is not easily explained. Some geologist proclaim that White Pocket is a result of “soft sediment deformation”, meaning the contortions and twisting and turning at White Pocket occurred back in Jurassic time while the sand was saturated and before the sand was completely turned into rock.
